A rarely seen entry in the Tom Hanks filmography, this warm romance shows his romantic side as he plays an American who falls in love with Sarah, a Sephardic Jewish girl, beautifully played by Cristina Marsillach in her Hollywood movie debut. It's set against the backdrop of World War Two Palestine, and we could be in The English Patient territory here, with Hanks as a wounded US flier whose non-semitic roots are destined to prevent the course of true love from succeeding. Heartwarming fare, but a mite too sluggish and predictable.
