This romantic 'dying girl' wallow was the unexpected (and huge) box-office success of its year. If you're feeling a bit 'soft focus' after a few G&Ts, then you'll love this schmaltzy adaptation of Erich Segal's best-selling novel. If you're in a cynical mood, then Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw, as the love-struck college kids, may grate on your nerves. Indeed, everyone will have to suspend belief a little to take O'Neal's character seriously, especially when you remember what he's been up to since. Ray Milland as O'Neal's father adds acting gravitas, and a very young Tommy Lee Jones makes his film debut. The movie did give rise to a memorable selling-line: Love means never having to say you're sorry.
