The actor, writer and director first attracted critical acclaim for the noirish thriller One False Move with Bill Paxton and Billy Boy Thornton.
A familiar face on the small screen after numerous parts on The A-Team and Roseanne, he made his feature debut with the well-received Punk.
He followed this with the thriller Nowhere To Run, the war drama Eye of the Eagle 2 and the action adventure Full Fathom Five.
After One False Move, which was named one of the ten best films of 1992 by the National Board of Review, he wrote and directed the acclaimed Devil in a Blue Dress.
Franklin then helmed the emotional drama One True Thing, inspired by Anna Quindlen's novel, starring Meryl Streep and Renee Zellwegger.
Next up was the convoluted thriller High Crimes, starring Ashley Judd whose husband is suddenly accused of war crimes in South America.
Recent work includes the noirish thriller Out of Time with Devil in a Blue Dress star Denzel Washington and Eva Mendes.
