In 1969, a dozen patients, catatonic since surviving encephalitis 30 to 40 years earlier, were revived temporarily by a caring doctor and a new drug. Dramatically, the film is hampered by the fact that its high point, the 'awakening' itself, occurs halfway through the story and the downbeat aspects set in from then on.
But there is still much to admire and touch the emotions throughout the film. Robin Williams touchingly captures the withdrawn nature of Dr Sayer, the neurologist who finds it easier to communicate with a catatonic patient than with his unimpaired fellows.
Julie Kavner, as his faithful nurse, and John Heard as the sceptical chief of medicine, are also excellent. But the acting plaudits go to De Niro, who was still at the top of his game.
