The would-be sports journalist-turned-actor first gained attention as Edgar Alabaster in the romantic drama Angels & Insects.

The son of a nurse and salesman, Henshall grew up in the Barrhead area of Glasgow before joining the Scottish Youth Theatre.

He worked with Glasgow's 7:48 theatre company (after a spell with London's Mountview Theatre School) and then gained regular work at London's Donmar Warehouse.
He made his feature debut in David Leland's The Big Man with Liam Neeson and Billy Connolly and gained attention in the TV drama Lipstick on Your Collar.
After Angels & Insects, he landed roles in Peter Mullan's Orphans and the romantic fantasy The Man With The Rain in his Shoes with Penelope Cruz.
Henshall played alongside Billy Nighy and Tom Hollander in the well-received drama The Lawless Heart and also appeared in Thomas Vinterberg's It's All About Love.
