Brenda Fricker

Born: February 17 1945
Where: Dublin, Eire

The Irish actress won an Academy Award as best supporting actress for Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot.

"When you are lying drunk at the airport you're Irish. When you win an Oscar you're British," she observed at the time.

Her big screen career kicked off with a small part in Of Human Bondage but she first came to notice at Nurse Megan Roche in the TV series Casualty.

The same year she landed the role in My Left Foot and has gone on to appear in movies as diverse as Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Moll Flanders.

Recent work has included War Bride with Anna Friel and Veronica Guerin opposite Cate Blanchett.

Upcoming projects include Conspiracy of Silence with Hugh Bonneville.
