Masquerading as a no-holds-barred contemporary road movie, with a hooker and washed-up boxer fleeing from the police across the US this is, in fact a quaint, old-fashioned romantic comedy with a rose-tinted view of the supposedly downbeat life of its characters by Martin Ritt. The first, 'Norma Rae', won Sally Field a Best Actress Oscar, but the collaboration proved less successful with 'No Small Affair' and 'Murphy's Romance'. Much needed backbone is provided by the grossly under-used and under-rated Tommy Lee Jones, whose abrasive appearance transforms the syrupy mixture whenever he's on screen.
