Tommy Lee Jones shows remarkably little restraint as a Catholic priest becoming romantically involved with the girlfriend of a Christ-like stranger to whom he's given the last rites. But then nothing much rings true in this shallow but glossy murder-mystery that delivers off-the-cuff theology. The role of M Emmet Walsh as a detective on the case should have been much bigger, but then writer Ivan Davis doesn't want anything to get in the way of the central relationship between his wayward priest and the girl (a bright performance from Annette O'Toole).
