Not a bad first effort at directing by screenwriter Tom Rickman, who had earlier done the script for the underrated 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. Nurtured by Robert Redford's innovative Sundance Institute, the film starts out as a father-daughter relationship then explodes into a suspense thriller. Martha Plimpton is a revelation as the spunky 12-year-old at the film's core, while Brian Dennehy has the time of his life as yet another in his long line of low-lifes, exceeded only in the villainy stakes by Tony Frank as an even nastier piece of work. The ubiquitous Tommy Lee Jones offers spirit and sincerity as the girl's father.
