If you're fascinated by the inner workings of Hollywood, this comedy is a must-see. It chronicles the back-biting, insincerity, schmoozing, and daily cut and thrust of people willing to bend in any direction and ditch any principle to make The Big Picture. Kevin Bacon displays great comic timing in the pivotal role of innocent film school graduate Nick, at sea in the shark-infested waters of Tinseltown. He starts out with principles but soon agrees to make any changes to his script in order to get it filmed, ditches his girlfriend for a starlet, gets an effete agent and neglects those with his best interests at heart. Martin Short is hilarious as the agent and J T Walsh as unctuous as ever as a mogul with a penchant for lesbian angles. You may also spot, if you're quick, Eddie Albert, Elliott Gould, Roddy McDowall and John Cleese. And Jennifer Jason Leigh is almost unrecognisable as an avant-garde hip-hop dancer. This satire may produce pinpricks rather than deep cuts and some of its in-jokes could go over your head, but it's still fun to be with most of the time.
