Though slow to develop and mostly composed of people creeping around after rats, this is rather a jolly horror film about a giant bat (with tentacles for good measure) that occupies the area beneath an old mill and the adjacent graveyard. When a bullying, lecherous foreman, played with relish, a Vincent Price gleam and a vaguely fake Scottish accent by Stephen Macht, decides to clean out the old basement, the time has come for the sound of bat on bone. The Tom Berenger-like David Andrews is the strong and silent hero, and Brad Dourif steals all his scenes, as an exterminator who declares himself to be 'not one of your wheedling types Bruce Dern plays', before disappearing all too soon from the action. It's old-fashioned stuff (based on a story by Stephen King) that horror fans should enjoy.
