The seasoned stage actor has carved out a reputation as an accomplished character player increasingly cast in lead roles.
The second son of George C Scott and Colleen Dewhurst, he has enjoyed co-starring roles opposite the likes of Julia Roberts and Stev
He also enjoys a parallel career behind the camera and co-directed Big Night with Stanley Tucci.
After extensive stage work on Broadway as well as Boston and San Diego he made his big screen debut as a cop in Five Corners.
He then attracted plaudits for his performance of Willy, a homosexual who watches his friends ravaged by Aids, in Longtime Companion.
Roles followed in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky, Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again and his first lead as a dying recluse opposite Roberts in Dying Young.
Cameron Crowe's Singles provided a more lighthearted role and it was followed by Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle, in which he played Robert Benchley.
He starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Innocent and went on to appear in The Daytrippers, Lush and Other Voices.
In 2003, he starred in (and executive produced) Dylan Kidd's debut feature Roger Dodger about a cynical Manhattanite bon viveur.
The following year he starred in the comedy-drama Marie and Bruce with Julianne Moore and recent work includes the children's movie Duma.
