A long and gruelling film about the Irish gangsters of New York's Hell's Kitchen. Sean Penn is a young man who escaped the Kitchen and now, it seems, has returned. He renews acquaintance with Jackie (Gary Oldman) and his brother Frankie (Ed Harris), now the local protection boss - and rekindles his steamy affair with their sister (Robin Wright). The Irish gangsters are dinosaurs at the mercy of the modern technology of the Mafia, but they still kill people. A harsh and familiar tale of executions and betrayals, somewhat hampered by the fact that all the characters, even the girl, are cold and unsympathetic.
