You have to hand it to Britain's BFI and Film Four International. There can't be any other companies who would make a film about the black homosexual experience set against the Queen's silver jubilee in 1977. Not only that, but the film also portrays the racial prejudice that prevents even black DJs from making progress in the London of the late Seventies, and tries (not very successfully) to be a murder thriller as well! Performances are rough-edged but good, and the characters have an infectious energy that doesn't let your attention drop. This is no great movie but, given its elements (and its budget) this is probably about as good as it could get. The Metrocolor photography by Nina Kellgren is excellent throughout. Just don't try fathoming the thriller elements of the plot. You'll guess 'who done it' but we're still wondering why.
