Bachelor James Garner has to fulfil a promise he made to his mother years before and take on the care of his schizophrenic brother (James Woods) when she dies. Bob (Garner) finds looking after DJ (Woods) emotionally draining and socially limiting, but feels that putting him in a home where he can receive specialist care would be going back on his promise to his mother. Garner and Woods both won awards for this tense and moving drama. Woods in particular uses his somewhat edgy persona to good effect without caricaturing the illness or its victim. If not enjoyable in any lightweight sense, this drama is absorbing and ultimately satisfying. Well worth watching.
