The former dock worker attracted attention with his 1998 debut feature, the black comedy Very Bad Things.
As an actor, he is also known for his starring role opposite Linda Fiorentino in the neo noir classic The Last Seduction.
After growing up in New York, he attended a private school in Watertown, Connecticut before studying drama at Macalaster College in St Paul, Minnesota.
While he was there he worked as a pizza delivery boy as well as appearing in local theatre productions.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1985, he worked as a docker in San Pedro before landing his first big screen role in the comedy Never On Tuesday.
Acting appearances included films like Wes Craven's Shocker and A Midnight Clear before he made his directorial debut with the TV series Chicago Hope in 1994.
The same year he starred in The Last Seduction and went on to appear opposite Sly Stallone in Cop Land.
In 1998, he directed Very Bad Things, with Cameron Diaz and Jon Favreau, and went on to make the American TV series Wonderland.
Whilst on a recce for the 2003 movie Welcome To The Jungle he was ambushed and robbed in the Brazilian jungle but escaped unscathed.
Recent work includes the American football drama Friday Night Lights, starring Billy Bob Thornton.
