Uncompromising and ultimately heartbreaking, this is an excellent first feature film by Jane Campion, now recognised as an important director on the international scene. Emma Coles and Kris Bidenko are both right on target as the girls from broken homes who become best friends at school, but cope differently with the stresses brought on by difficult circumstances at home. The kind of film that makes you want to put back the clock and see the characters try again: unfortunately, life isn't like that, and Campion drives the point home skilfully in this painfully honest, artfully structured and genuinely poignant drama.
