This multi-award-winning true life TV movie established Sally Field as an actress to watch for and won praise from critics and audiences alike. She plays a young junior school assistant so disturbed by childhood experiences that she develops 16 distinct personalities, leading to radical mood swings and lapses of memory. These include worldly-wise Vicky, childlike Peggy and the musically talented Vanessa. Joanne Woodward, who won an Oscar as a similarly affected person in the 1957 film Three Faces of Eve, is excellent as the psychiatrist who successfully uncovers the various personalities and treats Sybil over an 11-year period. She was nominated for a Best Actress Emmy, but lost out to her co-star.
