If it had been 30 minutes shorter and had a different director and leading actress, this doomy film noir could have been a cracker. That might sound drastic, but there was a lot of potential here if a tighter overall grip had been exercised on the project, which emerges as an occasionally fascinating but too often slow and soporific suspenser. The perennially morose Jason Patric is pretty good as the no-hoper who forms the axis of the plot: an ex-boxer escaped from a psychiatric hospital only to wander into a bizarre plot to kidnap the diabetic son of rich parents. Bruce Dern is always watchable as the ex-cop who dreams up the scheme, but Rachel Ward is less than adequate as the seductive alcoholic who draws Patric into the plot. The story - the title has no relevance whatsoever - is nicely rounded off, but by that time you may have lost interest, which is frankly a real shame. Jane Greer, where are you when we need you most?
