A sort of Boys' Town 10 years on, with Pat O'Brien donning the dog-collar discarded by his great friend Spencer Tracy and playing a real-life Catholic priest who tried to steer St Louis tearaways from the paths of poverty and crime in the early 1900s. Although noteworthy for its sincerity and lack of superfluous romantic interest, the story lacks the inspiration of the earlier Tracy saga, perhaps because O'Brien was so used to playing priests he could find little fresh to bring to the role.
