About the only original thing in this slice of minimalist cinema, filmed mostly in the corners of rooms, is the hero's mega-high bouffant hairdo. Otherwise there are sparks in the dialogue and in the songs - 'I want to meet a model who's only got one name' sings the hero (Brad Pitt), who idolises Sixties' pop star Ricky Nelson - but not enough to suggest the film is going to build the cult reputation some critics thought. There must be better ways of spending even tiny budgets than having the hero encounter a few women, walk along a few streets, ride a few tube trains, amble around with his hand in his knickers, and arrive back at the point he started from. Lots of swearing though, for those who like that kind of thing. Catherine Keener, whose career has been making belated progress just recently, is the leading lady, and Samuel L Jackson's in it too.
