The accomplished stage actress is best known for her co-starring roles in the likes of Unfaithful, Independence Day and The Devil's Own.
The daughter of a New York cop, Colin was educated at the city's Baldwin High School, graduating in 1976.
She began her screen career in American soaps for four years before branching out to Chicago Hope, where she played a terminally ill doctor.
Colin made her big screen debut as an English teacher in Pretty in Pink in 1986 and went on to appear in Something Wild.
Subsequent feature appearances included the comedy Three Men and a Baby and the comedy romance The Butcher's Wife with Demi Moore.
On stage, her turn as Jackie Onassis in the Broadway show Jackie landed her a Theater World Award.
In 1996, she played the president's press secretary in the sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day and followed that as Harrison Ford's wife in The Devil's Own.
Although she concentrated on TV work, she also appeared in the drama Blue Car in 2002 and the part of Sally in the adultery drama Unfaithful.
In 2005, she played the president's wife in Forest Whitaker's romantic comedy First Daughter with Katie Holmes.
