Just to prove that occasionally they do make 'em like they used to, here's a sort of Shirley Temple film for the Nineties. Although the formula never really works in today's terms, this John Hughes movie was a big popular hit. Bill Dancer (James Belushi) and his cute but sassy nine-year-old adopted daughter Curly Sue (Alisan Porter) are hoboes. When Bill is hit by a car driven by Grey Ellison (Kelly Lynch), an attorney as wealthy as she's beautiful, things start looking up for our footloose friends. Down-to-earth playing by Belushi and Porter (as engaging a moppet as the cinema's thrown up in quite a while) stops this from oozing pure saccharin, even if it never quite grabs our emotions.
