This story of a New England family reunion during World War Two is on the whole realistic, well-scripted, and effectively directed by Marvin J Chomsky. The reliable Hal Holbrook turns in another strong performance as the crusty father of the family, Eva Marie Saint is effectively anxious as Mom and Nancy Travis makes a fine contribution as the daughter. Watch out also for the town's Western Union man who portrays perfectly the particular fear experienced by bringers of bad news.
