A laughable, graceless and distasteful tale of racial bigotry that marked a low point in the career of director Otto Preminger. Despite a top-drawer cast, it's sunk by many factors, among them Michael Caine's surprisingly inept attempt at an American Deep South accent, a tediously slow first hour, a pause for someone to croon the title song and a crazy guns-blazing finale that suggests a pantomime version of Greek tragedy. Hurry closedown.
