This touching film, directed by Claude Miller, is an uncredited adaptation of Carson McCullers' 'The Member of the Wedding', but is very different from Fred Zinnemann's 1952 film starring 27-year-old Julie Harris as the young girl in her early teens. Playing the heroine here is Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, and her performance is spot-on, helped by the fact that she is the right age. There are also good supporting performances, notably from Bernadette Lafont as the family's housekeeper. The film is down-to-earth, true-to-life and delightful.
