Whoever thought the idea of two narcotics cops becoming addicts themselves in pursuit of their prey was surefire reckoned without this treatment of the theme. Decked out with mournful music by Eric Clapton, the darkly-lit story is slow to the point of abstraction. Leading man Jason Patric mumbles unattractively even when not on drugs, while Jennifer Jason Leigh, in a rare below-par performance, sounds as though she has a stone in her mouth in her efforts to affect a Texas accent. Unbelievable, poorly written and filled with extraneous stretches of repetitive and meaningless dialogue to pad out some slow action scenes, the film is difficult to watch in more ways than one. First-time director Lili Fini Zanuck really blew it with this one and at time of writing hasn't had a second chance. You can take your choice of sentiments you want to echo, from Leigh's 'I just want it to end' to Patric's 'Feels like a long ride to nowhere'. Unintentional smiles, though, are the only ones you'll get from this.
