Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop

Born: April 21 1947
Where: Ann Arbor, Michegan, USA

The original 'Father of Punk Rock" has made forays into film including appearances in Sid & Nancy, Tank Girl and The Crow: City of Angels.

He was also apparently the model for the computer-generated character Gollum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.

"In a kids' movie I'd be the guy they hired to stick my hand in a toilet bowl. I tend to attract these things."

Growing up in Michegan, James Newell Osterberg took up the drums and moved to Chicago where he played alongside bluesmen.

In 1967 he changed his name to Iggy Pop and formed the Stooges but success was shortlived and it was only in 1971 when David Bowie took an interest the band had another crack.

However, the album bombed and it was Bowie again who came to the rescue when he asked Iggy to support him on the Station To Station tour.

The pair became friends and relocated to Berlin where Iggy recorded the seminal albums Lust for Life and The Idiot.

His subsequent career was blighted by drugs but he made his film debut as a prospective guest in Sid & Nancy.

Subsequent appearances included The Colour of Money, Cry-Baby and Rat Face in Tank Girl and he also penned the title song for Repo Man.

Iggy played Curve in The Crow: City of Angels and also voiced a newborn baby in The Rugrats Movie.

In 2000, he had a minor role in the comedy Snow Day and himself opposite Tom Waits in Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes.
