Hotshot investigative journalist Jason Cromwell (Albert Finney) has a top-rated TV news show and is 'The only man America really trusts'. But when his show's investigations into a banking scandal lead to the suicide of an (innocent) executive, Cromwell is forced to re-examine the show's ethics. A sharp script and a good cast put this drama well above usual TV movie expectations and although parallels with the Oscar-winning Network can be drawn, this is still a good film in its own right. Finney holds the attention as the journalist forced largely, but not entirely, by his own actions on a path towards self-destruction. There's strong support from Marsha Mason as his wife and Swoosie Kurtz as the show's hard-nosed executive producer. One of the supporting roles is played by the now star-billed Brad Pitt, whe makes a brief but effective appearance as a youthful cameraman.
