Despite fine acting from Julie Andrews (making her TV movie debut) and Ann-Margret, this family drama is an overwrought affair. Both play mothers of grown up young men who happen to be lovers. Neither has been able to accept their son's homosexuality, but they have to re-evaluate the situation when one of them falls ill with AIDS. Hugh Grant, in a role far removed from his Notting Hill romantic hero, plays the healthy partner who has to persuade his boyfriend's mother to bury the hatchet and come to terms with their relationship while there is still time. Unfortunately, the scriptwriter goes for easy pathos at every turn and despite the excellence of the performances, the cast can't overcome the limitations of the script.
