Somewhere between Prom Night and Dracula, without any real sense of menace, comes this vampire comedy. Buffy (Kristy Swanson), a high school cheerleader, is the latest in a centuries-old line of nubile vampire-slayers trained by a mystery man (Donald Sutherland) who comes to call. At first this works quite well, as Buffy moves from boy-mad airhead to vampire-mad airhead. The vampires, however, are relentlessly comic, never conveying the idea of an endangered heroine. Still, it remains a cult favourite and led to a long-running TV series with Sarah Michelle Geller taking over as Buffy. Look out for a young Ben Affleck making an uncredited appearance as a basketball player.
