A live action version of the classic Halloween ghost story that gave Walt Disney a big success in 1949 in a terrifying animated feature narrated by Bing Crosby. It was nominated for an Emmy (TV Oscar) as Outstanding Children's Programme of the year, but its credibility is constantly undermined by slapstick pranks, contemporary dialogue and by not being the least bit scary. Jeff Goldblum can do little with the central character of teacher Ichabod Crane, and the final climactic race with the legendary Headless Horseman is handled without any suspense or fright (unlike the earlier Disney version).
