The British certificate - 12 - really said it all for this mixture of live-action and animation that falls between two stools. Despite strong language and three big stars, it isn't really an adult attraction, and the language and sexual references make it not at all suitable for younger children. Once again, though, the actors do yeoman service in the cause of cartoon fun, especially Kim Basinger as the curvy embodiment of Holli Would, a 'doodle' who longs to be real and 'experience it all'. Gabriel Byrne is the cartoonist who finds himself trapped in his own creation and Brad Pitt the other sort-of human inhabitant of a world where, apart from one or two main characters, the animation is fluid and skilful but uninteresting. Director Ralph Bakshi partially keeps his Fritz the Cat-style excesses in check, but this one failed to restore him to the big league which seemed within his grasp with Wizards and Lord of the Rings.
