If you're a Bob Dylan fan, any opportunity to see the great man must be taken, so the chance to see this otherwise poor film shouldn't be missed. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid was a pretty good Western with a rotten performance by Dylan. With this film, it's the other way around. Here, typecast, he plays a somewhat reclusive rock legend who takes eager newcomer Molly McGuire (Fiona) under his wing. On a concert trip to England she falls for British pop star James Colt (Rupert Everett). All pretty predictable, really, although I'm not giving much away by saying she ends up with neither. As you might expect, the film depends largely on its music and although it's good, it's not as good as you would expect from Dylan. Emphatically not an actor, Dylan acquits himself well and American singer Fiona is also quite watchable. Everett, by contrast, is limp and uninteresting. Director Richard Marquand died not long after this film's completion. He will be better remembered for such thrillers as Jagged Edge.
