The plot of this western is all too familiar (enigmatic stranger looks after greenhorn family determined to make a new life for themselves in the untamed west), but that doesn't stop it being a well-crafted yarn that captures much of the spirit of classic westerns from earlier decades. Sam Elliott is every inch a 'man of the west' as the enigmatic stranger and our very own Tom Conti is the pacifist patriarch of the eastern family. Cowboy fans are grateful for what few horse operas they can get these days, so it's nice to see a skilfully made western that, just for a change, doesn't have Clint Eastwood in it. Thirty years ago, Elliott could have been a major star, as he was obviously born to be a cowboy!
