The lives of Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley, the poet Shelley and Lord Byron were the subject of three films: Gothic, Haunted Summer and this Spanish affair with a largely British cast. To give the drama an added lift, director/writer Gonzalo Suarez has mixed fact and fiction by making the Frankenstein creation the nemesis of the three principal characters. This adds dramatic impetus to Mary Shelley's belief that it was her creation of the monster which is the cause of the tragedies in their lives. There are fine performances from Lizzy McInnerny as Mary, Hugh Grant as Byron and Valentine Pelka as Shelley. Elizabeth Hurley is in it too. Although the film's pace occasionally slackens, it looks marvellous and most of its characters hold our attention throughout.
