Former Dallas star Patrick Duffy really comes into his own in this well-made drama about a family torn apart when a wife announces that she wants to move away to study for a degree, and then falls in love with another man. The husband is suddenly left to cope alone, with a teenage son about to make him a grandfather, his mother's death and a job transfer to another city. Duffy skilfully moves through a range of demanding emotions, giving the sort of multi-layered performance that he never even hinted at in his previous work. Danielle Steel has come up with a moving story about family and the pain that radical changes in one's family can bring. Diehard fans - and even many of those that wouldn't be caught dead in public with one of her books - will be hopelessly hooked on this unexpectedly effective tearjerker.
