This superbly photographed Australian western set in the 19th century is the follow-up to the successful The Man from Snowy River, which was made six years earlier and starred Kirk Douglas. In this story, Tom Burlinson reprises his role as the rugged mountain man, Jim Craig, now returning to claim his land and his love, Jessica, well played by the feisty Sigrid Thornton. In the role of Harrison, Jessica's father, Douglas is replaced by Brian Dennehy, who gives one of his familiar, blustering performances. The villain element is supplied by Nicholas Eadie, as the arrogant Alistair Patton, to whom Jessica is forced to become engaged. Naturally, villainy gets its come-uppance and there's a happy-ever-after ending in this nice old-fashioned piece of family fare, somewhat let down by its plot and dialogue. Never mind, the acting is strong, the galloping horses are wonderful, and the mountain scenery looks marvellous.
