The classically trained pianist made her big screen debut aged nine in David Lynch's epic sci-fil blockbuster Dune.
She got her first taste of celebrity aged four when she appeared on That's Incredible because of her advanced reading skills.
After Dune Witt movied to LA where Lynch cast her in the cult hit TV series Twin Peaks in role specifically written for her.
Lynch next used her a woman with a multi-personality disorder in Hotel Room in 1993, the same year she starred opposite Tim Roth and Bridget Fonda in Bodies, Rest and Motion.
Subsequent appearances included Sundance Festival favourite Fun and Quentin Tarantino's Four Rooms with Madonna and Tim Roth.
In 1995, she starred alongside Richard Dreyfuss in Mr Holland's Opus and also played Cybill Shepherd's quirky daughter Zoey in the US sitcom Cybill.
Roles followed in Bongwater opposite Owen Wilson and the thriller Urban Legend before John Waters cast her in Cecil B Demented with Stephen Dorff.
In the romantic comedy Playing Mona Lisa she utilised her piano-playing skills while she also had a supporting role in Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise.
In 2002, she starred alongside Hugh Grant and Sarah Bullock, in the comedy Two Weeks Notice and also appeared in the sword'n'sorcery yarn Sword of Xanten.
