Although its collection of adventures on the road don't give it the impetus of the contemporary Thelma & Louise, this is still a captivating female buddy road movie, starring Meg Tilly in one of her most beguiling turns as the sweet, innocent Marianne, running away from her unpleasant husband. She's partnered by Christine Lahti in an untypical role, subduing her natural warmth to play the tough, cynical, dislikeable Darly, fleeing from her unhappy past. These two sad souls leave Normal, Wyoming, and become pals on the road as they try to find their own paths to joy forms a bitter-sweet tale that's well-acted, well-observed, well-directed (by Edward Zwick, who made the very different Glory) and certainly well worth watching.
