A robust and lively car-chase thriller, in which Yvette Mimieux finds gainful work as a middle-class woman who plunges into a nightmare while on a cross-country drive to New York. Jailed on trumped-up charges, she's raped by the psycho sheriff (Severn Darden), but flees with convict Tommy Lee Jones. This unusually fast-moving, violent and in-your-face movie delivers the goods, even if the plot and motivations take some swallowing. Michael Miller directs with conviction, and the playing is on the nail.
