The real-life so-called 'Long Island Lolita' case dominated the nightly news and tabloid press for most of a year in the US and spawned three rival TV movies that screened within days of each other. This is the best of a poor bunch and the one that had the biggest audience with former wild child Drew Barrymore riding the crest of her new-found fame as the teenage Amy Fisher. Amy had a torrid affair with a married motor mechanic, Joey Buttafuoco, then turned up on his doorstep and calmly shot his wife, Mary Jo, in the head when she opened the door. Miraculously, Mary Jo survived the assassination attempt and had her day when she saw Amy in court charged with murder. Drew pouts and preens and successfully puts over the allure of the teen temptress. But you're left with the impression that the central characters deserved each other, and that the film smacks of grubby TV wallowing in sleaze in the pursuit of ratings. A slightly longer version was released on video with extra sex scenes that used a body double.
