An apocalyptic update of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with no Kevin McCarthy, but most other elements intact. The aliens are now shown to need some time to take over the bodies of humans and substitute them with blank replicas, via invasion by tendrils from the pods which bend people to their will. Director Abel Ferrara, in a switch from his usual mean-streets beat, cunningly casts a set of fairly blank-looking actors, so that the deceptions may be more chillingly accomplished. Once more two survivors escape at the end, but with nowhere to go. Slow to start, it certainly has its moments near the end and is, if nothing else, a dire warning not to go to sleep in the bath. Meg Tilly, in and out of alienation, gives the best performance. Not a patch on the original, but not a waste of your time either.
