Quite well done but awfully familiar, and we're once again with the rise of Nazism in Germany in the Thirties. Based on real events, it's the spirited story of a group of rebellious German teenagers. By embracing the American swing music and dancing, forbidden by their Fuhrer, the Swing Kids openly demonstrate their dedication to freedom of expression. But before long the propaganda machines of the Hitler youth are in motion, and some of the youngsters prove to be more dedicated to their ideals than others. It starts stickily, but builds in character and atmosphere as it goes along. A moving eye-opener in some ways, it will certainly make you cheer for the Swing Kids as they spit dangerously in the eye of authority. Okay performances really needed to be special to lift this film to excellence.
