School Ties

Brendan Fraser plays a boy from a working class Jewish family goes to an elite prep school in the 1950's and hides his religion until Matt Damon's jealous bigot forces it out in the open. An object lesson in the poison of prejudice. Trivia: A Massachusetts school used in filming had its name removed from the credits when it learned of the movie's anti-semitic theme.

School Ties

This drama of racial prejudice at a senior college for the sons of rich men lies somewhere between so-so and quite good.

Though not without merit or food for thought, it's by no means as gripping as landmark films in the genre.

David (Brendan Fraser) comes from a working-class Jewish family but doesn't tell his roommates, which with hindsight proves a grave mistake, and one which is to have serious repercussions.

As with many of these dramas, this is simplistic in treatment and its issues are fairly black and white, with characters either basically sympathetic to David or total bigots.

Nonetheless, it doesn't always opt for the obvious, as in David's attitude to authority, which is barely respectful - and, although prepared to talk frankly to his seniors, he rarely has anything really telling to say.

Fraser has a difficult task with this not entirely sympathetic role but does it well, although classmates Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck subsequently drew level in the race for top stardom. CLASSIC LINE: 'You must think I'm a real nosebleed.'

A very enjoyable gripping film. One can empathise with Brendan Farser's charcter David Green who is advised to keep his religion a secret just to fit in and not have any barriers obstruct him from achieving his goal and getting a scholarship for Harvard. Matt Damon is brilliant as the boy (Charles Dillion) who looses his girlfriend and his place in the school team.
