There aren't many likeable characters in cable television's answer to Hoffa. Jackie Presser, nicknamed (though not by his enemies) Jackie the Clown, was a big, ugly, tough, mean-eyed union boss who got into bed with the Feds, three wives and the Mob. British director Alastair Reid searches hard for this man's heart of gold but, unsurprisingly, can't find it. Writer Abby Mann, adapting his material from James Neff's neatly titled book Mobbed Up, treats it in drama-documentary style, aided by a strong cast that includes Brian Dennehy (as Presser), Maria Conchita Alonso (as his long-suffering third wife), Jeff Daniels, Eli Wallach and Robert Prosky. Lots of look-away violence in this one.
