This comedy is based on director Carl Reiner's semi-autobiographical Broadway play about a young Jewish boy (Reni Santoni) from the Bronx who wants to be a star of stage and screen, but whose mother (Shelley Winters) wants him to study and become a pharmacist. The stage play made a star of Alan Arkin, but it didn't do the same for Santoni, who lacked both the charm and wit to pull it off. But there are still plenty of laughs along the way, especially from Jack Gilford and Elaine May.
