There's more than just a touch of the Forsyths (Bill not Bruce! ) in this wry satire - set in Glasgow - on religion and education. Writer-director Charles Gormley largely succeeds in keeping whimsy at bay in telling his tall tale although he does not always manage to make it. Tom Conti is a considerable asset and his slightly jaundiced performance gives the film a strong spine on which some of the more fantastic flesh can flourish. Pleasing rather than out-and-out hilarious, the film bodes well for Gormley's future output.
