A highly original comedy that restored Woody Allen's stature in the genre after some early 1980s lapses. He plays a mysterious figure from the past, traced by `contemporary' newsreel, whose longing for friendship and companionship gave him the power to turn himself into likenesses of those whom he was with. More clever than funny, but marvellously hypnotic to watch, and with a few typically goofy Allen asides. As well as marrying several wives in various identities, his character is accused of `performing unnecessary dental extraction'! His story is related (in a dig at `Reds') by `witnesses', including a couple of aged reporters. `You just told the truth', says one, `and it sold papers. It never happened before! '
