The parallels between the Solidarity story and the events of late-18th-century France are skilfully drawn by that most patriotic of Polish filmmakers, Andrzej Wajda, in this absorbing story of the conflict between Danton and his one-time confederate, Robespierre. Spectacular cinema with Gérard Depardieu entirely at home in the title role.
